Cristo del Consuelo: History and Devotion
The venerated image is the Sacred Christ of Consolation, popularly known as Cristo de los Gitanos. According to the Sacromonte Abbey Foundation, it is a “precious carving of Christ crucified”, the work of sculptor José Risueño, dated 1695.
It is one of the images “most loved and prayed by the people of Granada”, with a special bond with the neighborhoods of Sacromonte and Albaicín. Its chapel, in the Collegiate Church of the Sacromonte Abbey, is a frequent place of prayer, where it shares space with Mary Most Holy of Sacromonte (18th century).
An important fact: The original image by Risueño remains in the Collegiate Church. The magnificent carving that processes each Holy Wednesday is a faithful copy made between 1987 and 1989 by the Granada sculptor Miguel Zúñiga Navarro, allowing devotion to come out to the streets each year.
