History

A unique personality

Back in 1953, Lola Medina, a great artist and María’s cousin, gave her a cave in the heart of Sacromonte so that she could found her own zambra. This was the beginning of LA CUEVA DE MARÍA LA CANASTERA, which would soon become an essential stop for the many personalities visiting the city: kings, princes, artists and intellectuals from all over the world. Over time, it became the most widely known zambra in Sacromonte.

Today, it remains one of the most emblematic places in our city and one of the most important tourist attractions in Granada, the city of the Alhambra.

Discover our history by visiting the Zambra

Enjoying a flamenco show with artists devoted to the artistic legacy of María la Canastera is not the same as attending a performance in a conventional theatre. The caves, with their whitewashed walls and low ceilings, create an intimate and immersive atmosphere that cannot be recreated anywhere else. This historical and cultural setting gives the show a unique depth, transporting the spectator to another time, when music and dance were among the purest forms of expression.
